Landscape and Still Life

My recent landscapes and still lifes revisit classical genres I first explored in the 1980s. Working within the confines of these, at times clichéd idioms, I have set myself a challenge to create a depth and freshness and a contemporary relevance.

I painted those places that have moved and inspired me: the NSW south coast, the wild seas and stretches of beach near Falmouth on the Tasmanian east coast, winter forests in the mountains in Kyushu, Japan.

Composing and painting still lifes is a process of quiet contemplation that has been part of my practice for 40 years. Using familiar bowls and pieces of cloth collected on my travels over the years I arrange and rearrange objects, shifting my angle of view and source of light. Always attempting to produce something elegant and profound in its ordinariness.
